Choosing Your Sofa

Posted by | Living Room Furniture | Posted on April 28th, 2010

Changing your old sofa is the same as removing the old plastic covering that has been hanging on your living room lamp for say, 5 years. Oh…the only design you are seeing now is the newest stain your son has added to the pile. And have you thought of how hard it is for you to get out from your couch? That’s too bad. These only mean one thing- its time to change your sofa.
It might have taken you some time before choosing the sofa from the furniture shop the last time you bought your couch. Only to find out that everything were all in vain. Your sofa was not as nice as you first thought of it to be. To ease out the trouble of choosing your sofa, here are some guidelines to make the work lighter:
- The size. Before doing anything, decide on what size should you buy. This doesn’t necessarily mean that you use your room size as the basis. The primary reason for this is to avoid the chance that your sofa doesn’t fit the door. Or if you are leaving on the second floor or so, it may be due to the size of the stairs or the elevator. Again, it is not only the length of the sofa that matters, check also on its width and height and maximum size that your room will allow.
- The color. It is not always advisable to pick the color that looks strong. As far as home designing is concerned, neutral colors still remain to be the ideal choice. Then if you want to capture those hot and striking colors then take advantage of the sofa accessories. Throw pillows are much less expensive and they may be great additions to your home décors. Plus, you can always change the looks of your living room by rearranging your pillows or by changing their pillow case colors.
- Assess your lifestyle. Consider your lifestyle and start from there when choosing the upholstery of your sofa. Also think about which part of the house will your sofa be placed. Will it be placed in the family room or in the formal living room? Having kids may also add to your reconsiderations. For the longevity of the furniture, avoid delicate upholstery like that of satin.
- The pattern. If you prefer plain design then it is best to narrow down your choices to more toned down colors. However, choosing patterned upholstery is another thing. Choose a pattern that may conceal “add-on” designs (those that are patented by your son). With this in mind, you may choose multi-colored pattern. This will help you hide the dirt and stains that your children have created.
- Examine the furniture. While you’re on-site, allow yourself ample time to examine the furniture itself. The underlying construction and the over-all sofa make up. Ensure yourself that you have tried the feel of the sofa. Sit on it like you are at you own home. This will give you a better idea of what the sofa may feel like. If possible, invite others to try the sofa as well. This will make you see the comfortability level of the furniture.
- Check other things. Inspect the accents of the sofa. Check the trimmings, the wood used in construction, the paddings, and the over-all design.
The question of- “will it match my room?” may arise. It is best to address this question and other issues as well. If you see some defaults, then look for another sofa. After all, choosing a defaulted sofa is not suggested in the guidelines.

Levitz Furniture Stores Now in Bankruptcy and Liquidation

Posted by | Dining Room Furniture | Posted on April 28th, 2010

Los Angeles – Short Report; “You’ll love it at Levitz” will now only be remembered as an old phrase and no longer a place you can go to buy at Levitz furniture stores. Some of their stores are being bid on by liquidators going in to make a quick turn around profit in buying specific locations and selling it off piece by piece. Other more well known brand names, such as Ashley Home will be buying some of the Levitz Furniture Stores to redecorate as their own branded store.

Levitz was once the largest furniture store chain in America with over $1 billion in annual sales back in 1999 or so. One important factor that lead to their downfall was having to close down stores that may have affected their ability to leverage critical mass and also their remaining stores weren’t moving along with migrating demographics. Moreover, the general educated public has started shopping online furniture store selections with price, selection, and quality at a touch of a button. People now look toward an easier method of buying furniture, such as at amazon.com, visiondecor.com, ikea.com, furniture.com, etc. Not that a website image of a sofa can take the place of sitting on one to test it out at the store, but it does offer a lot more convenience and knowledge about what you are getting and how much you should be paying for it.

Not being well positioned and flexible enough to face the ever changing landscape of the population and demand, people will have to start looking elsewhere as the time is nearing an end for Levitz furniture stores – I guess we can all say “We Loved it at Levitz”.

Are Your Looking To Have Air Conditioning Installed Into Your London Home?

Posted by | Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning | Posted on April 28th, 2010

In the summer months houses can become extremely hot, installing an air conditioning system into your property could be an effective way to heat and cool your home, as well as adding a unique selling point should you decide to sell.

Some air conditioning London specialists can design, install and maintain systems for residential, commercial and industrial properties. Meaning that as a customer you need only seek the help of one company with all issues relating to your air conditioning.

To ensure that you are getting the best quality service available it is essential that you find a company that performs regular on-site checks and carries out a continuous training programme with its employees. Meaning that their staff are always up to date with the latest technologies and procedures.

Air conditioning can be installed into your home by specialists, not only does it help to ventilate your property by maintaining the interior temperature it can also improve the quality of the air in your home, making it particularly suitable for those with allergies.

Specialists may also be able to install air conditioning units into commercial spaces such as, shops, restaurants and offices. This is beneficial to businesses as during particularly warm periods employee productivity levels and customer morale could decrease, with an air conditioning system a cooler temperature is maintained meaning that this is affected.

There is a wide range of systems now available to consumers, specialists will be able to advise you as to which would suit your commercial property best. Many are relatively inconspicuous, so don’t take up to much space and some businesses could qualify for tax relief under a Governmental scheme when they purchase an air conditioning system.

For installation into larger buildings and industrial units, Variable Refrigerant Flow- VRF air conditioning systems may be suitable. These are energy efficient, maintaining a comfortable temperature using heat recovery technology.

So, if you are based in the London area and are looking for a solution to combat the summer heat, contact an air conditioning expert, that could advise you of the products best suited to you.

Get Comfortable in your Office With These Tips on Office Furniture

Posted by | Dining Room Furniture | Posted on April 27th, 2010

When you think of office furniture, you like many people, probably start thinking, desk, chair, maybe a lamp, definitely a computer, and some pictrures on the wall. However the office furniture industry is a multi-billion dollar business. If you are in this line of work then you already know this, but for most of us we don`t. This kind of revenue also means the vast variety of choices when it comes to furnishing your office.

Earlier, the demand for office furniture was limited to file cabinets, desks and chairs but today it has diversified to include ergonomic chairs, recyclable carpeting and custom-built furniture. In 2006, U.S. companies spent $12.9 billion on office furniture. It is suggested that about 70% of the industry is using cubicles, which are more difficult to install than free-standing furniture.

A big name that comes to mind when you think of office furniture is Ikea. According to Eunice Lee of Oregon Business Magazine, “one of Ikea`s strengths is the personalization of its products. Their popular desks are customizable in color, height, and accessories.” Leaving you the consumer more options not only to choose from, but also to customize the product for where it will be placed. Let us not forget the office chair. Chairs are now sought after to be more comfortable and of course ergonomically correct. Danine Alati of Contract claims, “today`s ergonomic seats are so inherently functional that they work as hard as the users who occupy them.” Studies have shown that the more comfortable a chair is, the more productive you (or your employees will become). “Since lack of comfort translates to lack of productivity, ergonomic seating manufacturers are challenged to provide intuitive chairs that are easy to use and accommodating to users, with a clean, pleasing aesthetic, to boot,” continues Alati.

You`re Fired! Ok not quite, but we all know the show, The Apprentice, which is hosted by Donald Trump. Not surprising but now, even he is getting in on the office furniture act. According to furniture today, “Staples has launched the Trump Office, an exclusive licensed line of office chairs. The chairs` designs are inspired by the lifestyle of real estate developer and celebrity, Donald Trump.” Trump describes the products “as solidly crafted executive chairs.” According to Staples, “the chairs are made using stain-resistant, heavy-duty fabrics and leathers.” So you are not fired, but at least you`ll be comfortable.

Of course if you are creating or setting up a home office, chances are you are gearing it up to your own special needs, fashions, styles and work environment. Those same sentiments are agreed to by Heath Combs of Furniture Today whos says, “the trend in home office furniture is equally tied to technology in terms of its design and functionality.” Sligh Furniture Company`s Family Communication Center features a laptop docking station with power, Internet and data ports and Aspenhome`s Liv360 cocktail table includes an adjustable lift-top table and storage space for laptops, pens, paperclips, file folders and other desk accessories to name a couple of companies who are offering a more customized feel for the end user.

So you have some choices to make for your home office as well your office at work. The key to any piece of furniture or equipment you buy…make sure it is comfortable.

Buying a Sofa

Posted by | Living Room Furniture | Posted on April 26th, 2010

If you are considering buying a sofa then there is a lot that you have to think about before you commit to actually making the purchase. From how much you are going to spend, to where is the best place to buy: failing to prepare really is preparing to fail when you are buying a new sofa. Sofas are not the kind of purchase any person makes in a matter of minutes, you really should be considering how it will go in your house and also price.
Price is so important because when you are buying a sofa it is slightly different from when you are buying a jumper for example: saving 10% on a sofa and saving 10% on a jumper is very different! This article gives a lot of helpful tips on how you can effectively ensure that you really prepare and take all essential measures when you are buying a sofa.
Budget
Before you decide to splash out on anything, including sofas, you really must set a budget if you are looking to get the best deal you can. Lets consider this.
Imagine you did not set a budget and just went about looking for sofas. What if you see something that is too expensive but you become attached to it? Then you will never be happy! What you need to do is set a budget first, and then you can immeditaley write off options that are not viable for you. Once you set a budget you are ready to go, but dont feel you always have to spend all the way up to your maximum budget.
Credit Cards!
When you are buying a sofa always make sure that you are using a credit card. But why I hear you ask! Well there are a number of reasons, but the main ones are obvious. Lets say you buy a sofa and it does not get delivered on time? Well you will have the option to charge them back.
Also, if you happen to lose your data or it comes under threat – you will not lose as much money since you are insured for large amounts of money if someone steals your data. Always remember that most credit card companies will charge you a small amount, but not all of it like what might happen with a debit card.
Follow Your Instinct
When you are buying a sofa, you really have to ensure that you are going to really like it. Not just today, but also for tomorrow and for years to come. A sofa is not just for christmas!
You should be considering a sofa that will match the look and feel of your home and also how it is going to match as the decor of your house may change in the future. Come on folks! This is just common sense. When you are buying a sofa you really have to stop and think about yourself and what you will like, as well as the other people who live in your home.

Air Conditioning HISTORY 3

Posted by | Heating, Ventilating, Air Conditioning | Posted on April 26th, 2010

Early commercial applications of air conditioning were manufactured to cool air for industrial processing rather than personal comfort. In 1902 the first modern electrical air conditioning was invented by Willis Haviland Carrier in Syracuse, NY. Designed to improve manufacturing process control in a printing plant, his invention controlled not only temperature but also humidity. The low heat and humidity were to help maintain consistent paper dimensions and ink alignment. Later Carrier’s technology was applied to increase productivity in the workplace, and The Carrier Air Conditioning Company of America was formed to meet rising demand. Over time air conditioning came to be used to improve comfort in homes and automobiles. Residential sales expanded dramatically in the 1950s.In 1906, Stuart W. Cramer of Charlotte, North Carolina, USA, was exploring ways to add moisture to the air in his textile mill. Cramer coined the term “air conditioning”, using it in a patent claim he filed that year as an analogue to “water conditioning”, then a well-known process for making textiles easier to process. He combined moisture with ventilation to “condition” and change the air in the factories, controlling the humidity so necessary in textile plants. Willis Carrier adopted the term and incorporated it into the name of his company air conditioning. This evaporation of water in air, to provide a cooling effect, is now known as evaporative cooling. The first air conditioners and refrigerators employed toxic or flammable gases like ammonia, methyl chloride, and propane which could result in fatal accidents when they leaked. Thomas Midgley, Jr. created the first chlorofluorocarbon gas, Freon, in 1928. The refrigerant was much safer for humans but was later found to be harmful to the atmosphere by ozone depletion in the stratosphere. The resulting biological consequences included air conditioning an increase in skin cancer, damage to plants, and the reduction of ocean plankton.Freon is a trademark name of DuPont for any Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC), Hydrogenated CFC (HCFC), or Hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant, the name of each including a number indicating molecular composition (R-11, R-12, R-22, R-134A). The blend most used in direct-expansion home and building comfort cooling is an HCFC known as R-22. It is to be phased out for use in new equipment by 2010 and completely discontinued by 2020. R-12 was the most common blend used in automobiles in the US until 1994 when most changed to R-134A. R-11 and R-12 are no longer manufactured in the US for this type of application, the only source for air conditioning purchase being the cleaned and purified gas recovered from other air conditioner systems. Several non-ozone air conditioning depleting refrigerants have been developed as alternatives, including R-410A, invented by Honeywell (formerly AlliedSignal) in Buffalo NY and sold under the Genetron (R) AZ-20 name it was first commercially used by Carrier under the brand name Puron.Innovation in air conditioning technologies continue, with much recent emphasis placed on energy efficiency, and improving indoor air quality. Reducing climate change impacts is an important area of innovation, because in addition to greenhouse gas emissions associated with energy use, CFCs, HCFCs and HFCs are potent greenhouse gases when leaked to the atmosphere. For example, R-22 (also known as HCFC-22) has a global warming potential about 1,800 times higher than CO2[10]. As an alternative to conventional refrigerants, natural alternatives like CO2 (R-744) have been proposed.
