Plumbing Projects That Pack a Punch. Hub Plumbing & Mechanical Looks at Which Projects Offer the Highest Return on Investment
Posted by | Plumbing | Posted on September 11th, 2009
DATELINE: SOUTH BOSTON, MA…For many homeowners, remodeling or upgrading their existing home remains an appealing option in an uncertain real estate market. The question is, which projects offer the best return on investment in the long run?John Wood, founder and CEO of Hub Plumbing & Mechanical of Boston offers some suggestions on upgrade and remodeling projects that involve his area of expertise – anything that involves plumbing or HVAC considerations, including, of course, bathrooms and kitchens.First of all, it’s important to decide what your goal is – maintenance and repair or a lifestyle improvement? Do you want to simply upgrade tired fixtures or do you want to invest in a lavish gourmet kitchen, or a spa-like retreat to replace an existing bath?Notes Wood, “Plumbing is tricky; it’s not just a matter of running a few pipes to accommodate new fixtures or appliances. Depending on the age and condition of your home, you may be facing a hodge-podge of materials and plumbing “fixes” that have been incorporated over the years. You need to realistically determine what you can afford, establish a budget, and stick to it.”That said, which projects not only provide comfort and style, but also offer a good long-term return on your investment? Using Remodeling Magazine’s 2007 Cost vs. Value Report for the New England region as a basis, a minor kitchen remodel, which would include a mid grade replacement of existing plumbing fixtures, would recoup an 86% return on investment (ROI.) A major mid range kitchen remodel, with features such as a double stainless-steel sink and a center island, would deliver a 77.7% ROI. An upscale kitchen remodel, utilizing elements such as designer fixtures, and a built-in water filtration system, would have an ROI of 76.7% A mid-range bathroom remodel that would include the replacement of all plumbing fixtures, would deliver a 74.8% return on investment, while a midrange bathroom addition would yield an ROI of 65.8%. An upscale bathroom remodel, which would expand the bathroom within the existing footprint of the house, relocating all fixtures to accommodate a whirlpool and separate shower, would result in a 64.3% ROI, while an upscale bathroom addition, increasing the footprint of the house, would have an ROI of 64.1%Once you decide what improvements you would like to pursue, don’t forget the basics when planning an upgrade or remodeling project. Research contractors by license number to make sure that they ARE licensed, and to see if any complaints have been filed against them. References should also be readily available and should be checked for verification. Also, don’t forget to ask for a copy of the contractor’s insurance binder.About Hub Plumbing & MechanicalHub Plumbing & Mechanical was established in 1999 and now includes a staff of 16 full time employees. What Garden Furniture Should I Buy?
Posted by | Patio Furniture | Posted on September 11th, 2009
You may think that all Garden Furniture is built to last, but unfortunately that is NOT the case. Buying cheap Garden Furniture is very often the most expensive choice! It will need to be replaced often! The old adage is also true, “you get what you pay for”.
Having established that we are now NOT going to buy the cheapest that we can find, what should we do next? The first step is to decide what type of Garden Furniture that you like. This you can basically separate into two categories:
Metal Garden Furniture or Hardwood Garden Furniture.
Metal Garden Furniture:
If you want Metal Garden Furniture, and you want it to last, then you should select Metal Garden Furniture that is ONLY made of Aluminum. The reason for this is that Aluminum does not rust, so will last in all weather conditions. Having decided on Aluminum, you then must look at whether to go for “Cast Aluminum”, which is often solid and is made from Aluminum that has been Cast into a mould, or “Framed Aluminum”, which although lighter, is normally equally as durable. So if your preference is to have Metal Garden Furniture, selecting any type of quality Aluminum Garden Furniture, you will be sure of getting many years of use from your purchase.
Hardwood Garden Furniture:
This is my favorite! No two pieces are “exactly” the same and subtle differences in the grain, makes each piece unique. It would take a whole book to completely cover “Hardwood Garden Furniture”, because there are literally thousands of different options. However after the last ten years of selling “all types” of wooden garden furniture, my choice has narrowed right down to only one type of wooden garden furniture to buy, and that is one made of Teak!
The reason for this is very simple; it is the BEST there is to withstand most types of weather, including the often cold and rainy UK climate. Although it is certainly more expensive that most other types of wood, it is VERY hard wearing and will last for many years, with or without, any treatment, so really does justifies the higher price.
Teak is a natural product that is from a slow growing hard wood tree. So when you look to buy make sure that you select from a supplier that has Teak Garden Furniture that has ONLY been made from “Plantation Grown” Teak, which is a renewable resource, and not from a forest that is being destroyed by de-forestation.
Quality Teak Garden Furniture should last for 20 -25 years, so when you compare the life of it to the cost, it is extremely good value for money.

Everyone loves to have a beautiful garden. If you do have a beautiful one, you end up spending more time in the garden, truly enjoying the many wonders of mother nature. People who spend a lot of time in their gardens, naturally like to have the best furniture there. There is a whole range of garden furniture available which includes wicker, wrought iron, bamboo, plastic and different types of woods such as teak, oak, cedar etc. In fact a lot of people go in for teak garden furniture, since it has far more advantages than any of the others.
Some of these teak garden furniture choices are, tables, chairs, swings, garden benches, recliners, chaise lounges, sun umbrellas etc. All these are available in teak as well. People invest in teak garden furniture since amongst all hardwoods, its the most durable. And so despite the high costs associated with teak furniture, people don’t mind indulging on themselves. Really, this only adds value to your net worth in the end.
New trendy and stylish designs of teak garden furniture has come about, due to the high demand for teak garden furniture. Moreover due to this high demand, manufactures are cashing in on this and providing for customer’s personal choice. Customers inform manufacturers of their choice and manufacturers are creating individualized products as per customer’s requirements. This is a great benefit to customers who get exactly what they want in their teak garden furniture.
Choosing your teak garden furniture with care and creativity will help you in bringing out the best of you’re garden, since teak is associated with luxury, elegance and style. Craftsmanship in the intricate work on your teak garden furniture stands out. Another great thing about this furniture is that it does not require a lot of maintenance.
The beauty of you’re garden is enhanced, with tastefully created teak garden furniture. While outward beauty is essential, what is more important is the utility of the product. If you’re furniture is not comfortable, but looks great, there isn’t any need for it, is there? While choosing or designing you’re garden furniture this should be kept in mind. In addition, its important that you’re furniture is in sync with you’re house or garden. For example, you don’t want to have a Japanese garden and then have furniture designed for a country home. That would only make it look awkward. All these points need to be considered while making a decision to buy teak garden furniture.
Rattan Wood And Its Uses
Posted by | Living Room Furniture | Posted on September 7th, 2009
What is Rattan?
Rattan is a Malay word which means rotan. Rotan is one of a species of palms. These are native to Africa among other countries. The rattan palm is different than it’s relatives because it has thinner stems and are more like vines than trees.
Somewhat similar to bamboo except for the fact that rattan cannot stand up by itself. It grows over other plants for support. Most of the rattan that is harvested for making furniture is grown in Indonesia. Some pieces can grow up to 27 inches long.
Furniture makes like rattan because it is light and fairly easy to shape. The durability of rattan is more than other materials. The part used for weaving is the outer part or skin of the rattan. The middle that is left is used for other parts of furniture. Furniture and baskets made of this material are very popular. They can be painted or stained just like regular wood.
Do you know that not only is rattan used for making furniture and baskets but it is also used for baston, sticks which are used in the practice of martial arts. This is the only material that is allowed for use in making weapons in the Society for Creative Anachronism for combat in martial arts.
The handles of mallets used to play percussion instruments are made from rattan. Another use for rattan comes from the fruit. Certain types have a resin called dragon’s blood. This is used for dying violins. In earlier times it was thought to have value as a medicine. The light peach color of the resin when used as a dye is highly desirable.
Because as a material for making furniture it is a highly durable material, it has gained popularity over the years. Everyone wants a rattan couch and chair for their front seating area. From loveseats to chairs and couches the rattan furniture certainly makes a statement . It is the perfect furniture. It can be stained if you would prefer.
Some rattan furniture is used on screen porches and in the south, especially Florida the great look of rattan can be found in people’s homes where the atmosphere is more casual. The room in a lot of homes in Florida is called appropriately enough a Florida room. It is a mixture between a screen porch and a sun porch. The style is considered more or less an informal style. This is useful for entertaining and for having the grandkids over. It keeps your formal living room looking formal and with the sand that is present in most of the south this type of furniture is easier to clean than your formal furniture.
Rattan is probably more popular than the porch furniture of other eras. It has a better appearance than some of the older metal furniture. It is strong and durable and is easily changed to match your indoor or outdoor décor. Since it can be stained or painted as mentioned earlier, it is easy to change when you decide to change a room around or paint it a different color.

Not many of us would think of plumbing as a career. However, there are individuals who make upto £100,000 annually in this profession. The term plumbing immediately brings images of that guy from the plumber shop round the street corner who comes to fix the leaking taps.

The secret of choosing the right Garden Furniture
Posted by | Patio Furniture | Posted on September 1st, 2009
If you’re starting from scratch and looking for a new set of garden furniture, how do you choose what to go for? You may have experience of the garden furniture set your parents had or some friends who have a garden table and chairs that seemed comfortable. But do you choose wooden garden furniture, metal garden furniture or something else? There is so much choice – where do you start? Initially, you will have an idea of how much you want to spend. This will dictate, to a certain extent, the quality and style of the garden furniture you wish to buy. If you are on a limited budget, then probably the PVC route is the one to take. Functional and light, PVC garden furniture will last a few years but be prepared for brittleness after time in the sun. If you shy away from the PVC furniture, you should then decide how many people you wish to sit at your garden table. Probably 4 – 6 garden chairs would be the most common combination and this would comprise either a round or rectangular garden table. There is also the option of having a 4 seater garden table and a separate garden bench. This gives two distinct pieces of garden furniture, but allows for extra seating at the table, if required. Then, what construction material should you choose? Cast aluminium garden furniture has the big advantage of being virtually maintenance free and will never go rusty. For those of you with less time on your hands, the thought of doing nothing to your garden furniture, apart from the occasional “hose down” probably sounds quite appealing. However, patio furniture made from wood has that natural look and feel which only wood can give. Wooden garden furniture does not necessarily require any maintenance but treatment with oil a couple of times a year is recommended. There is a complete price range with wooden furniture, from the very cheap hardwood garden furniture, which could only last a couple of years, to the more expensive Teak garden furniture or Oak sets. You get what you pay for! If you want something to last a few years, then you have to pay for it and it can be false economy to buy cheap. So, when deciding what you would like to have in your garden, have a look around, decide your budget, select the material and go for quality!
